A high school excursion introduced Nicole to her first female composer… and it was a revelation. Until that day, the young musician thought that to be a classical composer you needed to be both male and dead. Today, although 26% of Australian composers are female, only 11% of new classical music performed at concerts are written by women. With a PhD in composition, and having written for the Royal Academy of Dance, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Space (New York), Nicole wants to change this statistic. This grant will help her to record a new work: a 20-minute string quartet piece commissioned by KammerKlang for the Geist String Quartet.
